Let’s discuss vaping!

Do you vape?
Do you think it's an issue?
Do you believe it's bad for you?

According to ASH. Action on Smoking and Health, 20.5% of young adults 18-29 vape, which is almost 8% higher than those who smoke. This may not seem like a large amount, but when you are referring to millions of people just in the UK alone, you'll soon see the scale of the matter.

Evidence reveals that vaping can have detrimental effects on productivity and hinder business growth. To address this issue, consider focusing on incentives to encourage employees to quit vaping. (This would also work for smoking).

Some negative effects on productivity

⛔ Reduced focus-Nicotine in e-cigarettes impairs concentration, affecting work quality and efficiency.

⛔ Increased absenteeism- Vaping-related health issues result in more sick days, disrupting workflow.

Business development implications

⛔ Healthcare costs- Vaping-related health problems strain budgets that could fuel business development initiatives.

⛔ Talent retention- Neglecting vaping concerns can lead to talent loss as employees seek healthier work environments.

Here are a few incentives for change that business's can, and should introduce.

Financial rewards- Offer monetary incentives, like bonuses or wellness credits, to employees who successfully quit vaping. Studies have shown that financial rewards significantly improve smoking cessation rates.

Extra holidays- Reward those who quit with extra paid time off. This can serve as a powerful motivator, giving employees a tangible benefit.

Wellness benefits-Provide additional wellness benefits, such as gym memberships or health insurance discounts, to non-vapers or those trying to quit. This not only promotes quitting but also incentivises a healthier lifestyle.

Recognition and awards-Publicly recognise and reward employees who successfully quit vaping. Acknowledgment and praise can be powerful motivators.

Creating a vape-free workplace through incentives not only fosters healthier, more productive employees but also contributes to business growth. What incentive strategies have you considered or implemented in your workplace? Share your insights!
